In my apprenticeship when I first learned to blow dry I was only trained with a Denman hair brush. I was taught how to section the hair and use a Denman brush to lift and turn to get tension on the hair. Then keeping the tension all the way down the hair - moving the air from left to right  and directing the dryer and brush down the hair shaft resulting in beautifully straight smooth hair.

After that I moved on to round brush blow dries trying hard not to get the brush tangled in the hair! The principle remained the same, to get the smoothest, lifted wonderful hair that my clients loved.

This was in the days before straightening irons and steam-pods. I believe good blow drying techniques are the foundation of today's looks.
