There are lots of ways to style hair. When I worked for Charles Worthington in the early 90's loads of our clients would come in for a Techni Art set. This involved blow drying with Pli (still in use by the worlds session stylists today) then setting the hair in large velcro rollers, drying it and letting it cool (very important) before combing out.

This is still used today however the world of styling has grown with the amount of products and styling tools available. Techniques from the past such as Barrel Curls and Finger Waves are great disciplines to practice to improve your styling skills.
